In January of 1991, the New Orleans Kendo Club (NOKC) was founded by
Shigeru Koyama sensei, who was a kendo instructor with the rank of godan from
Kagoshima prefecture in Japan. The current president of the NOKC is
Frank A. Anselmo, who was an original member of the club and one of the
first students of Koyama sensei. There are currently 10-15 active
members in the NOKC, which is open to all members of the New Orleans
community and its surrounding areas. Prior kendo experience is not
necessary. The NOKC has been an active member of the All United States
Kendo Federation (AUSKF) since 1993 and the Southwestern U.S. Kendo and Iaido Federation (SWKIF) since 1994.
